Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Supplemental Security Income is a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA). SSI provides financial help to disabled adults and children who have limited income and assets.
General Program Requirements
To qualify for this benefit program, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least age 65;
- Be blind or disabled;
- Have limited income and resources; and
- Be a Citizen or national of the U.S. or an alien who meets certain applicable requirements or
- Reside in one of the 50 States, District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands, except for a child of military parent(s) assigned to permanent duty anywhere outside the United States or certain students temporarily abroad.
Based on the information you gave about your income, assets, citizenship status and disability and your parents' income and assets, you could get SSI.
This screening tool only asks very general questions about your income and assets, citizenship, living arrangements and, if you are under 65, your disability. SSA will ask you for more detailed information. If you are under 65, they will also need more information about your disability.
To see the listing of impairments that can qualify for disability, visit the "Adult Listing of Impairments" page. Even if your condition is not included in the listing, you still could get benefits. To find out more about how SSA decides if you are disabled, visit SSA’s Publications Home Page and review "Disability," Social Security Publication Number 05-10029.
