An official website of the United States government
The .gov means it’s official.
Federal government websites always use a .gov or .mil domain. Before sharing sensitive information online, make sure you’re on a .gov or .mil site by inspecting your browser’s address (or “location”) bar.
This site is also protected by an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate that’s been signed by the U.S. government. The https:// means all transmitted data is encrypted — in other words, any information or browsing history that you provide is transmitted securely.
The purpose of the SSA BEST questionnaire, the benefit eligibility screening tool, is to help you identify Social Security benefits you may be eligible to receive, based on your answers to a confidential prescreening questionnaire.
Answer the questions in each category. You must answer all questions to move forward on the questionnaire.
Your answers to the questionnaire will be compared with eligibility criteria.
The questionnaire will return a list of benefit programs that you may be eligible for, based on the information provided.
Feel free to change or edit any answers to the questionnaire to look at different scenarios and what results will return.
To avoid losing your results, you will have the option to email yourself your results list or print your results list to save as a hard copy.
What if I am helping someone else?
If you are answering the questionnaire on behalf of someone else, answer the questions as they apply to the person looking to receive government assistance. “You” will apply to this person.
Why does the BEST questionnaire say I “may” be eligible to receive a benefit?
SSA BEST is a great place to begin your search for Social Security benefit programs, as a centralized educational resource. We partner with the U.S. Social Security Administration to provide citizens with information on government benefit programs and eligibility requirements. We cannot guarantee eligibility results as there are other factors that may impact your eligibility. The Social Security Administration is responsible for offering and administering benefits and handling the application process.
How much time will it take to complete the BEST questionnaire?
Typically, the questionnaire will take 15-20 minutes, however, the time will vary depending on the user. Having access to your personal information (e.g., financial, educational, familial) will help you complete the questionnaire more quickly.
Will my results stay on the website for future reference?
Please note that SSA BEST does not save BEST questionnaire results. If you leave the SSA BEST website, you will lose your results. You can email yourself by selecting ‘Email your Results’ at the bottom of the results page or select ‘Print Results’ to print a copy of your benefit results.
